Yemen airport shut after explosions at military base

Yemen has shut its international airport in the capital Sanaa after explosions were reported at an adjacent air force base.
A number of blasts were heard at the al-Daylami base, prompting flights to be rerouted from Sanaa International Airport to Aden.
Sanaa has been racked by fighting between forces loyal to President Ali Abdullah Saleh and his opponents.
Tens of thousands protest regularly for an end to his 33-year rule.
Transfer of power
Residents and witnesses said at least one shell had hit the air base.
One aviation official told Agence France-Presse news agency: "There were four explosions at the air force base alongside the international airport and two fighter jets went up in flames."
No-one has yet said they carried out any attack and no casualties have been reported.
Flights have been diverted to Aden in the south of the country.
Clashes continue between pro- and anti-Saleh factions.
Reuters news agency quoted tribal sources as saying four people were killed by army shelling in the Arhab area, north of the capital, overnight.
The UN Security Council has called on President Saleh to step down immediately and has condemned excessive force against protesters, hundreds of whom have died since the unrest began in January.
Mr Saleh has so far failed to implement a political solution based on a plan put forward by the Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC), which urges him to transfer power to his deputy.

IMRAN KHAN BY GEO NEWS | URDU | ENGLISH

LAHORE: Tehreek-e-Insaf Chief Imran Khan addressing tens of thousands of supporters at Minar-e-Pakistan on Sunday warned that his party would spearhead a civil disobedience campaign and seize all the cities if the government failed to have politicians declare their assets.

In his address to the cheering crowd that turned up in tens of thousands at ‘Pakistan Bachao’ call of TI Chief Imran Khan here at Minar-e-Pakistan, the cricketer turned politician also warned that he would go to the Supreme Court as well as the Election Commission of Pakistan if the politicians in the government and opposition failed to declare their assets as required under the Pakistan law.

He said Tehreek-e-Insaf would set up a cell to investigate and identify politicians who declare assets and those who do not.

Starting his speech following the National Anthem, Imran Khan gave his party’s programme in detail which, he said, aimed at making Pakistan a peaceful and independent country where investment would be attracted from across the world. “We will make Pakistan a place where people come from other countries to seek jobs.”

Talking of change, he said: “ Today we are beginning a new Pakistan from Minar-e-Pakistan, the place from where founder of the Nation Quad-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah began his movement”.

Spelling out his party’s manifesto in connection with Pakistan’s relations with the US, the Tehreek-e-Insaf Chief said ‘we will make friends with you (US) but not be your slave; we will help you (US) withdraw from Afghanistan but won’t launch any military operation (for you).’

He questioned that if US, being the super power, could not win the war through military means how could Pakistan?

“We will strengthen ties with China,” he said, adding, he was leaving for China on its government’s invitation tonight.

He said Pakistan was not a poor country; ‘it is very rich in natural resources’. Pakistan has 180 billion tonnes of coal reserves which means we can export electricity to the world, he added.

Imran Khan said Pakistan never needed to beg before others. “Pakistan will never beg again; Imran Khan will die but won’t beg,” he vowed amid vociferous cheers of the charged crowd.

Coming down hard on President Asif Ali Zardari, Imran Khan questioned how could Asif Zardari provide bread, cloth and shelter when under his rule 16000 people committed suicide.

He also claimed that ‘Asif Zardari’ wrote a letter to the US requesting it to please save him from the army because he was not able to serve them well with army interefernce.

He regretted that Mian (Nawaz Sharif) sahib should have done better than coming up with a show of ‘Patwaris’ the other day in Lahore.

Imran Khan said Pakistan was suffering a loss of Rs3000 billions per year mainly due to rampant corruption.

He said his party also aimed to bring about police reforms in the country to improve the working of this institution. “We will depoliticize police and then get the SHO elected like the way it is done in America,” he added.

He said condition of the villages will be improved and pledged to bring an end to military operation and target killings in Balochistan, which, he termed as a province rich in natural resources.. “We will make Balochis our brothers,” he added.

Criticising Pakistan Muslim League-N Nawaz Sharif, he said: “How can you fight with Zardari when you can’t even fight with mosquitoes?”

Pointing to the crowd, he said, Asif Zardar and Nawaz Sharif cannot stop this flood now. “This is not just a flood it is a Tsunami and anyone who tries to stand before it will be washed away.”

Pakistan Navy to construct Fast Attack Craft

Karachi - The Pakistan Navy (PN) on Friday announced construction of a ‘Fast Attack Craft’ for its fleet to be built indigenously at the Karachi Shipyard and Engineering Works (KSEW) in cooperation with China.

Keel laying ceremony of the first Fast Attack Craft (Missile) for Pakistan Navy was held at Karachi Shipyard today. Chief of Staff Vice Admiral Tayyab Ali Dogar was the chief guest on the occasion.

The construction of the state of the art Missile Craft is a Pak-China joint venture. Under the contract, one craft each would be constructed in Pakistan and China.

Speaking on the occasion, the chief guest said that execution of many projects and joint ventures is a reflection of ever increasing cooperation between Pakistan and China. Keel laying of the missile craft today is a step forward in this direction.

He apprised that the missile being built in China has already been launched on September 20, 2011 and is expected to be delivered to Pakistan in April 2012. He hoped that successful completion of this project will pave way for more projects to be undertaken in future.

Congratulating the construction team, the chief guest said that these missile crafts will bolster maritime defense of Pakistan.

He expressed his confidence that Karachi Shipyard along with Chinese technical assistance team will make relentless efforts for timely accomplishment of this project.

Apprising the audience about the characteristics of the craft, the Managing Director of KSEW Rear Admiral Hassan Nasir Shah said that the craft has a maximum speed of 30 knots and is propelled by 4 diesel engines. It would also be equipped with latest weapons and sensors.

The ceremony was attended by senior naval officers, engineers and technicians of Chinese and Karachi shipyard

MQM announces rally in Zardari’s favou

KARACHI / ISLAMABAD: Anti-government slogans in Lahore on Friday were countered by exhortations in favour of the government, particularly the president, in Karachi and Islamabad.
In a political rebuke to the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), the Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) announced it would hold a “protest rally against the derogatory language used against President Asif Ali Zardari by the PML-N leaders” in Karachi on Sunday.
MQM chief Altaf Hussain gave a go-ahead to the decision taken by the party’s coordination committee, said a party’s press release.
Denouncing the use of “derogatory and abusive language” against the president by Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif and other PML-N leaders at the rally in Lahore, Hussain said it “harms the integrity of the country.”
Expressing solidarity with President Zardari, the MQM chief said his party “would continue to support [the president] at every difficult time, and would not refrain from any sacrifice for the sake of democracy.”
The MQM also extended an invitation for the rally to Pakistan Peoples Party leaders and workers.
Awans come to rescue
Senior PPP leader Senator Babar Awan said his party leadership can neither be pressured by threats nor provoked by sloganeering of Sharifs and the “comedy show would lead to their downfall.”
Addressing a press conference in Islamabad, the former law minister said that PPP “cannot use such derogatory language against its political opponents.” Awan said it was “strange” that chief minister of “a minority government” in a province was demanding resignation from a president elected by over two-thirds majority by all federating units.
The former law minister was backed by information and broadcasting minister, Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan, who said that using non-parliamentary language against President Zardari “reflects the character of PML-N.”
“Holding a rally by using official resources is also the worst form of corruption,” she said, adding that the Punjab government has given “dengue and lawlessness to the people of the province during its four-year-rule.” The people who left the country after compromising with a dictator cannot launch a movement against the democratic government, she said.
PPP avoids ‘fight’ but lashes out at Sharifs
Interior Minister Rehman Malik told reporters at Karachi airport that the political rallies in Lahore are a “fight between the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf and PML-N.”
“Why is the Peoples Party being dragged into it?” he said, while also warning the PML-N against stopping PPP workers if they march in the Punjab.
Former law minister Babar Awan also criticised the Sharifs, accusing them of misappropriating Punjab’s resources. “It was a comedy show and government resources were used to organise it. They used police, health and all other departments to bring people to the rally,” he said. (WITH ADDITIONAL INPUT FROM APP)
